Becoming a Tinker Expert is a great way for trained auto technicians and certified gearheads to monetize their knowledge in a way that respects their time and their home life, while helping aspiring DIYers learn valuable skills while getting the job done.
Whether you want to earn extra money after work, at night, on weekends or during the day from home, Tinker provides a valuable and visible platform for Experts to connect with DIYers.

Here’s how to apply:
- Submit an Application
- Interested Experts submit their application through our online form at tinkerdiy.com.
- Eligibility criteria will be verified via our background check partner, First Advantage:
- Must be 18 years of age or older and reside in one of our current active states
- Have either 3+ years or more of automotive experience or hold an ASE Certification if experience is less than 3 years
- Have a strong knowledge of automotive systems including electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems
- Possess excellent problem-solving skills, exceptional attention to detail, plus strong communication and customer service skills
- Must own an iPhone with an operating system of iOS 14 or above or an Android phone version 12 or above
- First Stage Evaluation:
- If you meet the above qualifications, you’ll be invited to take an online Vetting Quiz via ProProfs:
- The quiz consists of five video questions:
- One question to get to know the expert
- Two questions assessing technical skills
- Two questions assessing customer service skills/interaction
- The quiz also includes two yes/no questions:
- Comfort level assisting customers from different ethnicities and backgrounds
- Comfort with using video chat to guide DIYers through repairs
- Second Stage Evaluation:
- After first stage approval, you’ll go live on the Tinker app as a Tinker Expert and begin taking calls
- The Tinker Operations Team reviews each new Expert's first 3 calls
- To maintain quality, subsequent call reviews are conducted for any call rated 3 stars or lower, and at random for other calls
